Laura McCrary
Viola

Where were you born?
Long Beach, CA.

What college did you attend?
CSU Long Beach and UC Santa Barbara.

What inspired you to start playing music?
Classical music was part of my home like growing up. My sisters played violin and piano, we listened to KFAC—a classical station, listened to recordings and attended summer concerts in parks. Later I attended Saturday youth concerts given by the LBSO.

Why did you choose your principal instrument?
My junior high orchestra teacher (Jack Palacios, former principal bassist with Long Beach) talked me into it. And I love the tone quality and being in the middle of all the sound.

What other instruments do you play?
Piano, violin.

When did you start playing with the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra (what year)?
1968.

With what other orchestras do you perform?
None currently. Former member of Santa Barbara Symphony and have “subbed” in some others.

Who is your favorite composer?
I have several favorites, but Brahms stands out for his lush harmonies that are still in the formal structures of musical competition.

What is your favorite orchestral work?
Mahler’s Symphony #2.
Why?
Use of choir/soloists most effective; emotions expressed.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you while onstage?
My stand partner dozed off in rehearsal—not the Long Beach Symphony though—a different orchestra!

What do you enjoy doing besides music? (hobbies, etc.)
Camping. Singing in a choir, reading and walking.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Chocolate chip (favorite frozen yogurt is Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia).

Is there anything unique you’d like our audience to know about you?
I am one of just a few of the symphony players who went through schools in Long Beach and played in the All-District Orchestra.
