The pieces on the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra’s first disc evoke the tidal forces and enchanting colors of the world’s oceans. Listeners will enjoy Debussy’s La mer, a classical favorite, as well as less-often-heard pieces inspired by the sea. These include Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave), Liadov’s The Enchanted Lake, Bridge’s The Sea: Suite for Orchestra, and Debussy’s La cathédrale engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral).Impressions of the Sea was recorded at the end of the LBSO’s 1998 Classics season under the baton of Maestro Falletta. |
What do you get when you cross the visual arts with orchestral music? Masterpieces of musical art.Now you can own three such masterpieces on Pictures, the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra’s second compact disc recording. Pictures includes Trittico botticelliano, Respighi’s colorful symphonic poem; the romantic Frescoes of Piero della Francesca by Martinu; and Maurice Ravel’s masterful orchestra of Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The music on Pictures was originally performed by the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra at the close of its 2000 season. That final concert marked the departure of the orchestra’s eminent conductor, JoAnn Falletta, who had served as music director since 1989. |
